Gardening has always been popular but after the amount of time we’ve spent at home, the plant lady trend has really gained speed. Social media certainly plays a part in making shoppers green with envy over the insta-worthy Hilton Carter limited-edition collection.

While most of us certainly enjoy and want live plants to fill our homes, we’re not all born with a green thumb. The truth is, maintaining plants — especially indoors — can be quite difficult and requires a lot of attention and maintenance. So, what happens now that we’ve left our homes and have less free time to devote to our indoor plants? The answer is faux plants.

I know, I know. Faux plants, really? While they’re not the real thing, there are tons of faux plants and trees that could make even the most seasoned gardener do a double take. Artificial plants have come a long way and can quickly bring “life” to any space — and these picks can do just that for less than what you would expect.

Where to Buy Fake Plants

1. Amazon

Is it really a budget shopping guide without a mention of Amazon? Shoppers know Amazon is convenient and for savvy people, it’s usually one of the first places to browse when looking for any product. Personally, I like to search Amazon to get a feel of pricing and decide if it’s worth taking the Amazon purchase gamble or finding a comparable price in-store. That said, Amazon has tons – and I mean tons – of faux plant and tree options, as well as decorative fillers and other elements to get creative with.

2. Ikea

Ah, Ikea. There are just too many good things to say about the Swedish retailer (with their meatballs for sure being at the top of the list) and their selection of faux (and live) plants is once again a hit. Ikea is awesome for anyone on a budget, DIYers or shoppers who simply don’t want to spend more just because they can.

Next time you’re at Ikea, take a look at their garden section. Planters, plant stands and of course, faux plants, that section is gold and tends to go overlooked by Ikea customers.

3. Home Depot

The home improvement store Home Depot surprisingly has a great selection of faux plants and if you’re feeling adventurous, live plants too. Varying in size, height and styles (some even come potted), you’ll get the most bang for your buck here.

In addition to faux plants and trees for your home, you can also purchase trendy event decor like boxwood panels that can be used as a Photobooth background.

4. Lowe’s

Just like Home Depot offers a great range of reasonably priced fake plants and trees, so does Lowe’s. Lucky for you in your hunt for faux plants, you can earn cash back shopping at Lowe’s with RetailMeNot. Lowe’s faux plants and trees offer a wide variety of styles, with plenty already planted in stylish and trendy planters.

5. Target

We all know Target is one of the best shops for all things home decor. Fake plants, trees and single stems, Target has your faux plant needs covered. In the past, notable green thumbs Joanna Gaines and Hilton Carter both have carefully curated collections with the retailer featuring ultrarealistic faux plants to spruce up your space.

6. Walmart

Walmart stores have everything under the sun, and that includes its fair share of artificial plants, trees and flowers at prices you can’t beat. Some options are sold by Marketplace sellers, so those prices can be higher in some instances.

At price points to fit everyone’s budget, Overstock is a popular destination for saving on home stuff and renovations. You’ll find faux trees, floral centerpieces and plants galore that you won’t be able to resist.

8. Crate & Barrel

Crate & Barrel isn’t the most affordable store on this list, but when it comes to artificial plants that look real, taking a peek at what they have to offer is worth the click. Depending on the size you’re looking for, some options really are affordably priced. And you’re guaranteed to get a plant that oozes a high-quality aesthetic.

9. Kohl’s

You likely associate Kohl’s with affordable apparel, but the retailer also has plenty of home decor, too, including artificial plants. Kohl’s has more expensive hanging plants mixed with budget-friendly ones. And if you’re shopping with Kohl’s Cash or earning Kohl’s Cash, the savings are only extended.

10. Bed Bath & Beyond

You can find plenty of inexpensive fake plants that can almost pass for real at Bed Bath & Beyond. Plus, there’s a good chance some will even be on sale, and if they’re not, just grab a 20% off coupon that’s almost always readily available.

How to Pick a Fake Plant

Even though you’re just searching for a faux plant, it’s still a good idea to do a quick scan of your space. If you have built-ins, shelves or a bookcase, consider an ivy that falls dramatically and can add depth to an otherwise plain area.

Mix up colors, leaf styles, sizes and heights to create a more visually pleasing arrangement. Try adding a faux ficus tree to fill in an empty space.

Arrange decorative items in threes. Take a quick scan of any interior design magazine or Instagram and you’ll notice this pattern of grouping. As humans, we gravitate towards symmetry, so applying this train of thought will help you hone in those design skills you thought you didn’t have while simultaneously creating an aesthetically pleasing display.

Be careful: If it feels too staged, chances are it probably is. Remember at the end of the day, your house is your home, and shouldn’t feel as if you’ve walked into a Fabragé Egg exhibit – look but don’t touch! Toss in random or sporadic items to break up perfectly placed decor, creating a sophisticated yet lived-in look.
